Adik Dicky is not the first person he has helped. Over the years, through his consistent duit infaq, hard work, and genuine willingness to serve, Abang has quietly been a pillar of support for countless people in need. Many focus only on that heartfelt moment when he refused to charge Adik Dicky late at night, but even if he had charged a fair amount, it would still have been respectable. At 12.30am, after deducting the cost of parts and labour, the earning would have been minimal — yet the risks were high. That late hour on the road is no joke, which is exactly why so many other foremen turned down the request and even blocked Adik Dicky’s number.

Abang chose to go out that night not primarily for profit, but out of a sincere desire to help someone stranded. The decision not to charge came naturally from the kindness in his heart. When the story went viral, he didn’t chase the spotlight. He politely rejected interview requests, including from ERA Radio, and turned down all forms of publicity. While Adik Dicky received a lot of attention, the reality is that Abang himself deliberately stepped back from it all.

This humility stands in stark contrast to some of our politicians, who seem unable to contribute anything without slapping their faces or party logos on every box, every aid package, and every project — turning public service into a never-ending publicity stunt. Abang even temporarily refused to open his tabung for donations, not wanting to exploit the wave of virality. He believes contributions should come from sincere hearts, not from fleeting trends or social media hype. True kindness doesn’t need a camera or a crowd.

Some cynical voices mocked him, suggesting he was “shooting content.” But even if parts of his daily work are shared online, what matters is the content itself: positive, uplifting, and genuinely helpful. That is infinitely better than the toxic content that exploits race, religion, or hatred just to gain clicks and followers. Besides, Abang doesn’t need Dicky Lau or any single viral moment to be popular. He is already well-known and respected on his own merits — with over 511,000 Facebook followers and 832,000 TikTok followers, where almost every video consistently garners hundreds of thousands of views and above.

What makes Abang’s character even more inspiring is the story behind his generosity. He openly shares that his habit of helping others stems from a bitter experience in his own past. There was a time when he was completely broke after work, with no money left even to fill petrol for his motorcycle to get home. He asked a friend for a small loan of just RM5, but the friend refused and left him stranded by the roadside. Abang had no choice but to push his motorcycle all the way home. That painful memory left a deep mark on him.

“Dulu saya pernah tak ada duit. Masa nak balik kerja, minyak petrol habis. Saya minta seorang kawan pinjam RM5. Tapi dia tak bagi pinjam. Dia tinggalkan saya tepi jalan dan balik. Saya terpaksa tolak motosikal balik rumah. Itu sejarah saya,” he said.

From that day onward, he made a personal vow: he would never let another person go through the same humiliation and hardship if he could help it. That single act of rejection became the turning point that transformed his life and his way of treating others.

This is the kind of quiet, consistent humanity that Malaysia needs more of — the type that comes from lived experience and genuine empathy, not from photo opportunities or political calculations. Unlike certain politicians who, after being denied allocations in the past, now deliberately restrict funds and opportunities to areas or communities that didn’t vote for them, Abang Minyak Hitam Jalanan gives without expecting votes, gratitude, or headlines.
